Repair or replace

Should you repair or replace your furnace?

The answer is not always the expensive one, and not always the cheap one. Here is how we decide, in the same words we would use standing in your basement.

Repair it

The unit has real life left and the fault is a part, not the design.

  • Under about twelve years old and it has been serviced along the way
  • The fault is a flame sensor, an igniter, a pressure switch or a capacitor
  • The heat exchanger is sound and the combustion test comes back clean
  • The part is still in production, so it is a morning of labour, not a parts hunt
  • It is already a condensing furnace, so the efficiency gain from replacing is small

Replace it

The money is going into a unit that will ask again next season.

  • Past fifteen, and this is the second or third call in as many seasons
  • The repair quote comes to anywhere near a third of a new installation
  • A cracked heat exchanger, which is a red tag and the unit comes off the same day
  • It is a mid-efficiency unit venting up the chimney at roughly 80% AFUE
  • It was oversized when it went in, so it will never stop short cycling

If a repair gets you another few good seasons we will say so. Nobody here works on commission.

In every furnace replacement

What's included in a Calgary furnace installation

Two quotes for the same furnace can be thousands apart, and it is almost never the box that explains it. These four are what you still have after the van leaves.

A furnace that suits your house

Sized on what your house actually loses, not on whatever came out. Oversize a furnace and it short cycles all winter.

The ductwork and filter it breathes through

A new furnace on an undersized return runs hot and loud. The filter goes in the right size, in a slot you can reach.

A thermostat that suits the furnace

A two-stage furnace on a single-stage thermostat runs like a single-stage one. Wired, configured, and shown to you before we go.

The permit, and the paperwork after

The permit pulled, the inspection booked in your name, and the equipment warranty registered. Two years on the labour.

The process

How a furnace installation works with TNT

Three steps, and the same person start to finish. Whoever comes out and gives you the quote is the one who returns to see the installation is done properly.

  1. We measure first

A real visit to your Calgary house. The sizing, static pressure across the ductwork, gas line capacity, venting route.

  2. The price up front

Equipment, labour, venting, gas, electrical*, permit and disposal, all itemised on one sheet before anything is ordered.

  3. In and commissioned

Boot covers on, drop sheets down, old unit out and the new furnace installed. Every technician in your house is a TNT employee.

The quote is written on the visit, not posted to you three days later. If your system is down right now, skip the form and call. 24/7 emergency service, an owner answers or calls back.

*Electrical sometimes needs a licensed electrician. Where it does, it is discussed on the visit and added to the quote afterwards rather than priced on the spot.

New furnace timeline

How long does a furnace installation take in Calgary?

Most furnace installations in Calgary take a single day. A straight swap is out, in, commissioned and cleaned up by mid afternoon.

  • One day, most of the time

A straight swap in the same footprint. Old unit out, the new one set and levelled, gas and venting reconnected, thermostat configured, combustion tested.

  • Add most of a second day

If the venting has to come off the chimney. Sidewall PVC means new penetrations to cut, clearances to hold at the terminations, and a condensate drain to route.

  • Add part of a second day

If the gas line is undersized for the new unit, or the return is strangled. Both get priced before the job is booked, never discovered halfway through it.

Which of those three applies is decided on the quoting visit. If it is worth fixing instead, we book Furnace Repair & 24/7 Emergency instead.

Paying for it

Paying for a new furnace over time

A furnace installation Calgary homeowners did not plan for is a four-figure decision.

  • Monthly promotions on installs

Promotions on new installations change through the year, so ask what is running when you book. Once approved, you sign off directly with the lender.

  • 15% off on every new install

The discount comes off the price we quote you. There is no list price marked up first so the saving looks bigger than it is. Ask about it when you book.

  • The full price in writing first

Equipment, labour, and what is included, itemised before any work starts. If something turns up on the day, you decide before we carry on.

  • Two year warranty on the labour

If our workmanship is at fault we come back and fix it, no argument. The equipment carries its own manufacturer warranty on top of that.

Subject to a third-party credit check. Approval and terms are set by the lender, not by us, and we will tell you what you qualify for before you commit.

Why TNT

Why Calgary homeowners choose TNT

A furnace is a box a hundred companies in Calgary can sell you. What separates one furnace installation Calgary quote from the next is who bolts it in.

Family-run

Since 2020

Started by family and close friends and still run by them. No head office, no franchise agreement, and no regional manager between you and the work.

In-house crew

No subcontractors, on any job

The technician in your mechanical room is a TNT employee, not a crew hired for the week. The standard is the same on the fifth job of the day as on the first.

Answered, not queued

24/7, answers or calls back

No heat at 2am in a Calgary February is an emergency, not a ticket. Ring at any hour and an owner answers or calls back, tells you what to check, and when someone can be there.

Priced in writing

Before a tool leaves the van

An itemised quote covering equipment, labour and what is included. 15% off new installs, plus financing with promotions that change through the year.

Commissioned properly

Combustion tested every install

Gas pressure set, venting verified, static pressure read across the ductwork, and a combustion analysis run before we leave. Two year warranty on the labour.

What Calgary homeowners say about TNT Heating & Air Conditioning

5.0Rated on Google

Every review TNT has ever received is a five star review. These are the Calgary homeowners whose furnace installation we did.

TNT installed the furnace system on our new build, and then we proceeded to get our AC with TNT as well. Jamie was super responsive, kind, and informative… In addition to being fairly priced.

Great job and great price.

It was -30 kind of winter day… other companies asked for us to wait over 24 hours… Jamie came to service our non heating furnace within an hour and fixed the problem quickly.

Adelia Timirboulatova

Amazing service. I would not go with anyone else. Jamie tells you the truth, stands by his work and follows up.

Robert Milne

Not only was TNT very reasonably priced, they fit me into their busy schedule during the heat spell and got me all set up in no time.

John Klassen

Jaime was professional and kept me informed throughout the entire process… His technician arrived on time, was knowledgeable, and took the time to answer all of my questions.

Glenn Jefferies

Would highly recommend. Check with TNT before making any decision regarding heating or AC install. Believe me. They were amazing.

Choosing the furnace

Choosing your new furnace

Every furnace installation Calgary homeowners get from us is high efficiency condensing, 95% AFUE or better. The choice you actually make is staging, which is how finely the furnace controls its output.

Single-stage

One output, on or off

Fires at full output every time it runs, so the house swings either side of the thermostat. Defensible on a small tight house, a rental, or one you are selling.

Two-stage

Low fire and high fire

Runs on low fire for most of a Calgary winter and steps up when it turns cold. Longer, gentler cycles, quieter operation, and fewer swings through a chinook.

Modulating

Variable, with an ECM blower

Trims its output in fine increments instead of steps, paired with a variable-speed blower. The most even heat and the most expensive, and it wants sound ductwork.

Bring us the quotes you already have. We will walk you through what each one is proposing, line by line, so you can compare them on the same terms.

What it costs

What drives furnace installation cost in Calgary

We do not publish a price here. The honest spread is too wide for one number to mean anything until somebody has seen your mechanical room. These six things are what your quote is made of.

  • The output your house actually needs

Worked out by measuring your own house, not copied off the old nameplate. Paying for output the house cannot use is how a quote gets inflated.

  • The efficiency and staging you pick

A single-stage condensing unit and a modulating one do the same job at very different prices. This is the one line on the quote you genuinely control.

  • Venting, and whether it has to move

Coming off a chimney and out a sidewall in PVC means new penetrations, correct terminations and clearances, and a condensate drain that will not freeze.

  • The gas line capacity you have

The pipe has to carry the new furnace with the hot water tank, the range and the garage heater all running. Where it will not, it gets upsized and priced.

  • The ductwork you already have

We read static pressure before quoting. An undersized return strangles any furnace put in front of it, so if one needs opening up you see it on the sheet.

  • What goes in at the same time

A humidifier, a smart thermostat, a filter cabinet, or an air conditioner while the plenum is open. One visit costs less than two, and none of it is required.

The number you approve is the number you pay. The 15% off new installs comes off the real quote, and HVAC financing in Calgary runs with monthly promotions on new installations, subject to a credit check.
